Sunday, February 21: With the measure you use, it will be measured to you

Read Matthew 7:1-5

On Sundays we'll walk through events in the life of Jesus Christ found in the four Gospels.

Read Matthew 7:1-5

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Reflect

How easy it is for us to see the faults of others, while "forgetting" about our own glaring shortcomings and sins. As usual, Jesus turns this kind of attitude on its head. He holds up a mirror to each of us, telling us to know ourselves and to correct our own faults, instead of looking to pass judgment on others.

Respond

Ask God to help you know yourself, complete with your imperfections. Ask him to help you see others as he sees them, with grace and compassion.
