Wednesday, January 20: Now listen, you rich people

Read James 5:1-6

Read James 5:1-6

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

Reflect

Since time began, cultures have regarded wealth as the guarantee and proof of success, power, and security—regardless of how that wealth is obtained or at what cost to others who are less fortunate. But that's not how God's economy works. What really matters is not what you have, but who you are in relationship to God.

Respond

Father, it can be so easy to get drawn into the world's notion that accumulating money and possessions trumps everything. Instead help me see those things from your perspective. May I appreciate what I have from your hand and be willing to use those resources for your kind of good. Amen.
