Wednesday, January 13: Let them show it by their good life

Read James 3:13-16

The New Testament letter of James challenges believers on several fronts. Where do trials come from? Are we saved by listening or by doing, by faith or by works? How should we treat the rich and the poor? Join with us as we read through this important, practical book.

Read James 3:13-16

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

Reflect

Do you ever wonder if the way you look at others and at life is actually inspired by God or if it comes from some other source? James says that one way to tell is to consider the kind of life that your way of thinking has produced in you. Read again the traits and actions that are inspired by the devil. How is your wisdom, or your worldview, reflected by deeds done in humility?

Respond

If you want your actions to change, your way of thinking needs to change as well. God wants to give you his wisdom, but where is that wisdom found? Thank God that you are gaining his wisdom through these daily Scripture readings.
