Sunday, January 10: Few things are needed

Read Luke 10:38-42

Sunday in the GospelsOn Sundays we'll walk through events in the life of Jesus Christ found in the four Gospels.

Read Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Reflect

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus clearly calls on his followers to live out their faith in what they do for God and for others. But here he refers to Mary's act of simply sitting at Jesus' feet as "what is better." In your life, how do communion with God and working for him go together?

Respond

If simply being with Jesus is unfamiliar to you, take just five minutes of quiet, unhurried time, not with any goal in mind but to experience his presence right where you are. Imagine sitting with him or walking alongside him. If this is part of your regular practice, give yourself extra margin today to enjoy his presence.
