Friday, January 1: Quick to listen, slow to speak

Read James 1:19-21

Read James 1:19-21

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Reflect

What's the connection between anger on the one hand and listening and speaking on the other? How might listening lead us away from anger? Do you ever think of this kind of anger as "moral filth" and "evil"?

Respond

Jesus, make me, like you, slow to speak but quick to listen, both to you and to those I love and those around me. May I hear and understand and accept the word you've planted in me, to become the best version of myself that you've designed. Amen.
