Tuesday, October 13: And we ought to lay down our lives

Read 1 John 3:16-18

Read 1 John 3:16-18

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Reflect

How does John link between Jesus laying down his life and us providing material possessions for those in need? Do you make that link as you go through your life? Why or why not?

Respond

Jesus, help me gain understanding of your sacrifice for me. Help me at the same time to understand your desire for me to live sacrificially with neighbors who have material needs, so I can show my love for you in this way. Teach me to love not just with words, but with actions. Amen.
