Monday, May 13: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful

Read Luke 6:32-36

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

Reflect

We all do it, every day. We forget how mercy once radically transformed and redirected our own days, which affects how we respond to ourselves and to others. If we're not careful, we can soon be leading busy, self-centered lives which lend themselves to a sense of entitlement: We demand others surrender to our way, and we forget mercy — mercy freely given to us by the merciful Father.

Respond

Take a moment to remember what mercy has done in your life. Grab a pen and write it down. Turn your thoughts into a prayer of thanks. Try making this a weekly habit to help you remember the free mercy you've received.
