Friday, May 17: The mouth speaks what the heart is full of

Read Luke 6:43-45

"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

Reflect

The health of the fruit tells the health of the tree. Jesus shows us that even though the outside things will grab our attention, we must also look inward. Take, for example, a news headline, which instantly grabs our attention, and soon we may hold a belief we know very little about. The challenge of Jesus is to pause and ask ourselves, "What's underneath this headline?" Jesus encourages us to dig underneath to find the roots and discover what's really true in the world and also in ourselves.

Respond

Imagine a tree, from its heights down to its roots. Think about yourself alongside this image. Ask yourself, what's happening underneath, what kind of fruit are you bearing to the world?
