Wednesday, August 21: Just as he who called you is holy

Read 1 Peter 1:13-16

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Reflect

Jesus' disciple Peter, writing to new followers of Jesus, calls them to live holy lives. Notice how he describes what a holy life should look like. What are some of those characteristics? Would you be able to describe your life as holy?

Respond

Our ultimate example of holiness is "the one who called you," the one who called Peter to leave his fishing nets and to follow him. Are there still evil desires that you hang on to from when you lived in ignorance, before becoming a follower of Jesus? If so, identify them, confess them, and fight against them today. You are called to be holy.
