Monday, September 30: Come, follow me

Read Matthew 4:18-22

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." At once they left their nets and followed him.

Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Reflect

These young men were the first people Jesus invited to follow him, to learn from him, and to work with him. Jesus' invitation motivated them to get up and leave their jobs — immediately.

Respond

Did you notice that there were no excuses offered? No one said that this wasn't a good time. No one asked if it would be OK to come tomorrow. They left at once and followed. Jesus invites each of us to follow him, to learn from him, and to work with him. Are there any excuses keeping you from accepting Jesus' invitation today?
