Friday, October 11: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you

Read John 21:15-17

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."

Reflect

Did Jesus know that Peter had denied knowing him, that Peter's love had been overpowered by his fear? Of course he did. And yet now, following his resurrection, Jesus graciously gives Peter the opportunity to reaffirm his love for Jesus. Not only that, but Jesus also commissions Peter for a leading role among his followers. Can God really use sinners like Peter — and like you and me?

Respond

Our past sin need not disqualify us from being used by the Holy Spirit in God's kingdom work. How might he use you today? Tell him that you are willing and eager to serve.
