Monday, May 25: That all of them may be one

Read John 17:20-23

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one — I in them and you in me — so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Reflect

We are so blessed that this prayer, prayed by Jesus, is recorded for us by his disciple John. In it, Jesus prays not only for himself and his disciples, but he also prays — drumroll, please — for us! Two thousand years ago Jesus looked through the generations yet to come, and saw us, who will have become believers through the eyewitness testimony of his disciples. And what does he pray for us? Safety, health, right doctrine? These are all good things, but not what was on Jesus' heart as he prays near the end of his life. He prays for unity: that his followers might be one. How important is unity among Christians to you?

Respond

Is there something you could do today to strengthen the bonds of unity with other Christians? Are there things you could carefully avoid that often bring division and strife?
