Friday, January 8: By what they do and not by faith alone

Read James 2:20-26

Daily ScripturesThe New Testament letter of James challenges believers on several fronts. Where do trials come from? Are we saved by listening or by doing, by faith or by works? How should we treat the rich and the poor? Join with us as we read through this important, practical book.

Read James 2:20-26

You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Reflect

Paul cites two heroes of faith from the Old Testament. Consider reading Genesis 15 and 22 to remind yourself of Abraham's story. Also, consider reading Joshua 2 to learn about Rahab's actions. Why do you think James chose these two people to demonstrate his point about faith and deeds?

Respond

In what ways might God be asking you to demonstrate your faith through your actions? In the area of money? Or faithfulness in marriage? Or trusting him with a serious medical or emotional issue? Ask him to give you the faith and strength of Abraham and Rahab today.
