Saturday, May 11: Woe to you who are rich

Read Luke 6:24-26

"But woe to you who are rich,

for you have already received your comfort.

Woe to you who are well fed now,

for you will go hungry.

Woe to you who laugh now,

for you will mourn and weep.

Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,

for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets."

Reflect

Jesus now pronounces the opposite of the Beatitudes from yesterday's passage. Instead of admiring those who are successful according to the world's standards, Jesus says, we should look on them with woe as those who are the most unfortunate.

Respond

Once again, check your values. As you observe people today, remember that those the world counts as the most prosperous are actually afflicted and have already received their reward. To see the way of Jesus, simply turn the way of the world upside down.
