Tuesday, August 4: Now this is eternal life

Read John 17:1-5

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

"Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began."

Reflect

Two tremendous truths are present in this first part of Jesus' prayer. The first is that Jesus and the Father exist to glorify one another, to shine light on one another. How beautiful is that? The second is that eternal life is to know God and to know Jesus Christ. How are these two truths related?

Respond

If eternal life is what Jesus says it is here, are you living an eternal kind of life now? If not, what does Jesus say should be your focus? Pray and ask both the Father and the Son, through the Spirit, to glorify one another for you so that you can know them.
